The dream for manufacturers is to meet the demand with an "omnichannel" packaging, a universal packaging that would meet all distribution channels.

In the conclusion of the first period of the Packaging Revolution, it is written: "Reuse and re-employment are knocking at the door of this revolution to stop a systematic single use in sectors where it is not always justified..."

The door is now wide open and marketers will have to go through it quickly given the ambitious targets of the new European regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR).

The reuse and reutilisation of packaging is based on three main principles:

  • The primary packaging is refilled by the consumer with a refill designed for this purpose;
  • The primary packaging is returned to the store by the consumer, sometimes via an automatic machine that returns the amount of a deposit.   • The packaging sold empty or with a deposit is used by the consumer to use products sold in bulk.

Today's reusable and reusable packaging solutions do not yet meet all the requirements, both from a regulatory point of view and in terms of functionality. However, some forerunners are already committed. They are experimenting with different solutions. These solutions have both industrial and commercial consequences and are ultimately subject to the implacable verdict of consumers.

What are the first lessons learned in terms of refillable packaging and refills, in terms of reusing reusable packaging in industrial conditions and selling in bulk in adapted containers?
