3 Questions to Engilico

Interview with Renaat Van Cauter, Marketing Director

Which is the major subject you are currently focusing on?

Engilico’s focuses on 100% seal inspection of flexible packages such as pouches, flow wraps and pillow bags that are frequently used in the food, pet care and other industries.  Our in-line solution SealScope detects wrinkles, folds and product in the seal that can create leaking packages. Leaking packages cause important issues for food companies as it may lead to reduced shelf life, product returns and even expensive recalls with potential brand damage. As such automatic detection of defective seals is important for both food safety and production automation in packaging.

Recently, Engilico also introduced an innovative demonstrator to detect contamination in the seals of thermoformed packages and trays. The inspection solution HyperScope uses hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology and dedicated image processing. It allows to detect contamination in the seal with a much higher contrast than traditional vision-based systems and to measure through printed and transparent film.

What is your strategy to answer the increasing demand from both the industries and the consumers, in terms of sustainable development / eco-design?

In general, Engilico’s solutions improve packaging quality, increase machine output and enable end-of-line automation.  SealScope eliminates the need for manual inspection as it automates the seal inspection process. As such, the number of outgoing defective packages is drastically reduced, leading to less product returns and less scrap.

As SealScope inspects every produced package, it is also a valuable monitoring tool to finetune the packaging process to optimize production speed with the required package quality. As such the number of defective packages can be reduced considerably, again leading to less waste of foil and product.

Why did you choose to take part in ALL4PACK 2020? / Which kind of decision makers do you meet there?

As we are expanding our international activities, we participate in large packaging tradeshows in Europe and Americas. We are mainly addressing producers and co-packers in the food, pet food and pharma industries. We aim at companies that are automating their production processes and focus on controlling their product and package quality. As such the decision makers we want to meet are production, quality and operations managers, directors or VPs.
